Michael Ancher

Danish Painter, 1849-1927 He studied at the Kongelige Akademi for de Sk?nne Kunster, Copenhagen (1871-5), where his teachers Wilhelm Marstrand and Frederik Vermehren encouraged his interest in genre painting. He first visited Skagen in 1874 and settled there in 1880, having found that subject-matter drawn from local scenery was conducive to his artistic temperament. In Will he Manage to Weather the Point? (1880; Copenhagen, Kon. Saml.) several fishermen stand on the shore, evidently watching a boat come in. The firmly handled composition focuses on the group of men (the boat itself is invisible); each figure is an individual portrait that captures a response to the moment. Ancher's skill at grouping large numbers of figures with heroic monumentality compensates for his lacklustre colour sense. A change in his use of colour is noticeable in the works produced after an influential visit to Vienna in 1882; he was deeply impressed by the Dutch Old Masters at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, especially the Vermeers. Their effect on his painting can be seen in the Sick Girl (1883),   Related Paintings of Michael Ancher :. | anna ancher vender hjem fra marken | Self portrait | The Sick Girl | portraet af min hustru | Henrik Pontoppidan |

French Baroque Era Painter, ca.1605-1676 He dedicated himself exclusively to the art of landscape painting, and it is presumed that he spent his entire career in Paris, as there is no evidence to support claims that he went to Italy. In 1633-4 he was admitted to the guild of St Germain-des-Pr?s and in 1635 was admitted to the Acad?mie de Saint-Luc. In 1651 he took part in a vain attempt to merge the Acad?mie Royale and the Acad?mie de Saint-Luc, after which he remained loyal to the latter.
Alexander Coosemans
(1627, Antwerp - 1689, Antwerp), was a Flemish Baroque painter. According to the RKD he was registered as a pupil of Jan Davidsz de Heem in 1641 and in 1645 he became a master in the Guild of St. Luke.He travelled to Rome in 1649 but was back in Antwerp in 1651. He painted flowers, fruit, and inanimate subjects, and flourished in the Netherlands about 1630. Fruit subjects by him are in the Augsburg Gallery and the Belvedere at Vienna. In the Madrid Gallery there is a fruit-piece attributed to a J. D. Cooseman, who is said to have flourished in the Netherlands in the 17th century: and in the Bordeaux Museum, a fruit-piece ascribed to a N. Coosman. He was followed by Hendrik Schoock.
Horatio Mcculloch
Scottish Landscape painter ,1805-1867 Scottish painter. He was trained in the studio of the Glasgow landscape painter John Knox (1778-1845) and at first earned his living as a decorative painter. By the early 1830s McCulloch's exhibits with the Glasgow Dilettanti Society and with the Royal Scottish Academy had begun to attract buyers, notably the newly instituted Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland. Commissions from book and print publishers allowed him to concentrate on easel painting. On his election as full Academician of the Scottish Academy in 1838, McCulloch settled in Edinburgh and soon became a prominent figure in the artistic life of the capital and a prolific contributor to the Royal Scottish Academy exhibitions. At the same time contact with Glasgow was maintained: McCulloch's favourite sketching grounds were in the west, he exhibited regularly in the city and his most loyal patrons were wealthy Glasgow industrialists such as David Hutcheson (1799-1881), the steamship owner. He seldom exhibited outside Scotland and only once at the Royal Academy, London (1843), but he kept in touch with London artist-friends, John Phillip, David Roberts and John Wilson (1774-1855), through correspondence and visits. His own art collection was evidence of his admiration for 17th-century Dutch painters, for J. M. W. Turner and Richard Wilson.
